Bayern: "The greatest news for us all", Kompany discharged from hospital after meningitis

Bayern manager Kompany discharged from hospital after five days; diagnosed with meningitis following a collapse at training last Friday.

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital after five days of treatment, sporting director Max Eberl announced on Wednesday. Medical examinations confirmed the 40-year-old Belgian suffered from meningitis, an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

Kompany collapsed on Friday afternoon following a training session with Bayern's first team. He was immediately transported by ambulance to a Munich clinic where he remained hospitalized. Eberl told ARD: "It is, I believe, the greatest and most beautiful news for us all" upon announcing his discharge. "We discovered what it was: an inflammation of the meninges that caused this incident last Friday."

Eberl confirmed Kompany has been cleared to return home for recovery, which will consist of rest and medication. The sporting director previously indicated the manager's absence would be measured in weeks rather than days, but expressed confidence in a full recovery. "The essential thing is that the cause has been found and that he heals, that he can rest peacefully — and that he only returns when he is in shape," Eberl said. Assistant coach Aaron Danks is managing the team in Kompany's absence.
