Mourinho and chaos - is Real Madrid boss misunderstood?

Analysis of Mourinho's tactical approach at Real Madrid, examining how his flexible, player-led system differs from the fixed philosophies of other modern coaches.

Jose Mourinho's tactical mastery was on full display as Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 last weekend, prompting reflection on his 26-year managerial career and why his methods are often misunderstood.

In that Clasico, Mourinho deployed an unconventional 4-4-2 shape with Federico Valverde at right-back and Jude Bellingham playing alongside Kylian Mbappe up front due to Vinicius Jr's suspension. He instructed Bernardo Silva to man-mark Barcelona's Pedri, minimising the midfielder's influence, while Real exploited Barcelona's high press by drawing opponents wide before switching play to create space on the far side. Mourinho later explained at his press conference how deep runs from his midfielders proved hardest for Barcelona to track, undoing Hansi Flick's front-footed approach.

Unlike coaches lauded for clearly defined tactical systems and fixed positional patterns, Mourinho follows tactical periodisation—a philosophy pioneered by Vitor Frade that treats technical, tactical, physical and psychological elements as interconnected rather than separate. His approach leans on player quality and adapts based on the club he leads, making it harder to analyse from outside and easier to misunderstand. Since taking charge at Real this season, Mourinho has shortened training sessions while intensifying them, always keeping the ball central to fitness work.
