Arteta puts young talent Dowman on notice: 'We are not in Disneyland'

Arteta clarified his post-match anger at 16-year-old Dowman after the red card against Fleetwood, saying their relationship remains strong but discipline is essential.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta addressed his heated reaction to Max Dowman's red card in Thursday's League Cup tie against Fleetwood Town, emphasizing that despite his immediate frustration, there are no problems between them.

Arteta explained his anger stemmed from concern for the teenager's future, noting this is not the first disciplinary incident. "My reaction came from a moment of emotion and extreme frustration, because I know what the consequences can be, especially for Max," Arteta said at his Friday press conference. "It's something we discussed just before the game, because it's not the first time this has happened."

The manager stressed the importance of honest communication with young players while protecting them. "We have to be able to tell each other the truth. He's sixteen and we have to protect him very well. But at the same time we also have to be very honest about what we can expect from him towards the team, the players and the club. We are not in Disneyland, we are in the Premier League." Arteta confirmed he had spoken with Dowman since the match and drew on his own experience of making similar mistakes as a young player. Arsenal's appeal against the red card was rejected.
