Stefan Borson drops verdict on Chelsea sacking Xabi Alonso

Stefan Borson warns pressure on Alonso will mount quickly after Spurs loss and Carabao Cup exit, with Man United next.

Former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson has warned that pressure on Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso will intensify rapidly following a difficult start to his tenure. The Blues sit fifth in the Premier League after eight games and have lost to Tottenham and been knocked out of the Carabao Cup on penalties.

Alonso's comments dismissing the Carabao Cup as the "least important" competition at Stamford Bridge angered supporters, particularly given Chelsea's absence from European competition and slim title hopes. Borson told Football Insider the Spurs defeat remains "a bit of a shock" for the club and has already sparked significant backlash.

With injuries to key players like Joao Felix and questions over Alonso's handling of Estevao—the 19-year-old Brazilian benched since the Leeds win despite strong form last season—Borson expects mounting pressure ahead of Chelsea's weekend fixture against Manchester United, where victory is expected.
