Xabi Alonso rules out January loan move for Chelsea winger Estêvão Willian

Alonso rules out a January loan for Estêvão, saying the winger must adapt tactically to earn regular minutes after starting just twice in 11 games.

Xabi Alonso has dismissed speculation about a January loan move for Estêvão Willian, insisting the Chelsea winger remains part of his plans despite limited playing time this season. The 19-year-old Brazilian has started only twice in 11 games across all competitions and watched unused from the bench as Chelsea lost to Liverpool on penalties in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, fuelling concerns he could seek a move.

Alonso acknowledged the frustration but explained Estêvão must improve his all-round game to break into the team. "No discussions about that," the manager said. "Everyone has to be ready because in any game they could be important." He cited the winger's need to adapt to the Premier League's tempo and physicality, improve his decision-making with the ball, and become more competitive without it. Alonso suggested Estêvão could eventually play as a No 10 in his 3-4-2-1 system but has primarily featured as a winger.

Estêvão, who joined from Palmeiras for £51.4m last year and impressed initially, has managed only 47 minutes in the Premier League this season following a hamstring injury. Alonso stressed the adjustment is difficult for a teenager but part of the learning process, with Chelsea hosting Manchester United on Saturday.
