Michael Carrick to stay in charge of Manchester United for Roma game

Carrick stays for Roma despite nine-game winless run; review expected after Aston Villa match during international break.

Michael Carrick will remain Manchester United manager for Tuesday's Champions League game against Roma at Old Trafford, despite Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Chelsea. United have not won in nine games and sit 17th in the Premier League with seven points, their worst start to a season since 1988.

Carrick came close to losing his job last Monday when director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada met to discuss his future, but decided to give him a chance to turn results around. His position will be reviewed again during the international break after United host Aston Villa next Sunday.

Should Carrick be sacked, Eddie Howe is the preferred candidate, with contact understood to have been made; the former Newcastle manager would cost about £3m in compensation. Julian Nagelsmann is also highly regarded by United's director of recruitment Christopher Vivell.
