Fonseca announces departure from Lyon to Sporting CP
Summarised by MatchPal
Fonseca departs for Sporting CP after just two months; Jorge Maciel takes interim charge ahead of Europa League tie in Spain.
Paulo Fonseca has confirmed his departure from Lyon to the squad on Monday morning, just one day after the club's 2-0 victory over Angers in Ligue 1. The Portuguese manager, who arrived at the end of January 2025, is heading to Sporting CP, his boyhood club. Assistant Jorge Maciel will take interim charge of the team.
Maciel, who joined Lyon's coaching staff in summer 2024 under Pierre Sage, has already stepped in as interim manager once before, between Sage's departure and Fonseca's arrival. Lyon face Real Sociedad in Spain on Thursday in a Europa League regular-phase match. Former Manchester City assistant Carlos Vicens, recently dismissed from Braga, is reportedly the leading candidate to take the permanent role.
