OL to receive substantial sum from Fonseca's departure to Portugal

Fonseca departs mid-season for Sporting; Lyon receives €5m compensation and saves €2.8m in wages through June 2027.

Paulo Fonseca is leaving Olympique Lyonnais mid-season to join Sporting Portugal, despite Lyon's strong start to Ligue 1 (third place after nine matches). The Portuguese manager, whose contract runs until June 2027, has already said goodbye to the squad.

Rather than retain an unwilling manager, Lyon's board will benefit financially. Sporting will pay approximately €5 million in compensation. Additionally, with Fonseca earning roughly €400,000 per month gross, Lyon saves approximately €2.8 million in wages through the end of his contract. Combined, the club recovers or avoids spending around €7 million—equivalent to a mid-tier Ligue 1 transfer fee.

Lyon will need to cover the successor's salary (estimated €100,000 gross monthly), but the financial gain remains substantial. The sporting impact of the mid-season change remains uncertain.
