Dugarry disgusted by Fonseca's departure to Sporting

Dugarry criticised Fonseca's mid-season departure to Sporting, calling it mercenary behaviour and questioning the coach's emotional display after Lyon's 2-0 win over Angers.

Paulo Fonseca is leaving Olympique Lyonnais to join Sporting CP, taking over from Rui Borges. The Portuguese coach will depart in the coming days after Lyon's 2-0 Ligue 1 victory over Angers on Sunday, during which he was seen crying on the pitch.

Former France striker Christophe Dugarry expressed his disgust at the move on RMC's Rothen s'enflamme show, criticising Fonseca for abandoning the club mid-season despite having built the team around him. Dugarry questioned the authenticity of Fonseca's tears, arguing that if he truly cared he would stay to finish the season. He also condemned the broader trend of coaches behaving like mercenary players, prioritising personal ambition over their responsibilities to the squad and supporters.

Jérôme Rothen echoed the sentiment, highlighting the damage to French football's image and questioning how Lyon could lose such a respected manager mid-campaign. Both commentators acknowledged Fonseca's desire to join his boyhood club but felt the timing and manner of departure—particularly his emotional post-match conduct—sent a damaging message about modern football.
