Fonseca arrives in Lisbon to join Sporting Portugal

Fonseca arrived in Lisbon on Tuesday evening to complete his move from Lyon to Sporting Portugal, with a contract reportedly running until 2030.

Paulo Fonseca has arrived in Lisbon to join Sporting Portugal after leaving Lyon mid-season. The manager touched down on Tuesday evening and spoke briefly to waiting journalists at the airport, saying "I am very happy to return to Portugal and to Sporting." He declined to discuss contract details but indicated he would answer further questions on Wednesday or Thursday.

Sporting sacked Rui Borges on Sunday despite a 2-0 win over Casa Pia, turning to Fonseca, who has previously managed Porto, Braga and Paços de Ferreira in Portugal. Fonseca will be accompanied by assistant Paulo Ferreira, goalkeeping coach António Ferreira, fitness coach Paulo Mourão and analyst Nelson Duarte. Interim manager Tiago Fernandes led Sporting to a 1-0 Champions League win over Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday in London.

Lyon will benefit financially from the mid-season departure: with Fonseca earning approximately €400,000 per month, the club saves roughly €2.8 million until June 2027, and will receive a transfer fee from Sporting. Combined, the move is worth around €7 million to Lyon. Former Manchester City assistant Carlos Vicens is being considered as Fonseca's replacement at Lyon.
