Why Simeone's plan fell apart

Bayern Munich defeated Atlético Madrid 2-0 at the Metropolitano in Champions League matchday 4, with an early error from Le Normand proving costly.

Atlético Madrid's plan to counter Bayern Munich's pressing fell apart at the Metropolitano as the German side won 2-0 in Champions League matchday 4. Karl opened the scoring after a Le Normand error in the build-up, and Bayern's second goal ended the contest.

Simeone's tactical setup relied on Sorloth's presence to enable longer passes and second-ball opportunities against Bayern's suffocating press, but the Norwegian striker found himself isolated with teammates too deep. When Atlético did gain possession in Bayern's half, they lacked composure in the final metres and rushed their finishing. Julián Álvarez was ineffective, while Lookman, Kang-in Lee and Baena failed to create danger.

Absences of Cuti Romero, Johnny Cardoso and Morten Hjulmand weakened Atlético's defensive security and ball progression from the back. Koke's return from injury limited him to minutes. Bayern's physical intensity—maintained even at the 90th minute—proved beyond Atlético's current capacity, a recurring European problem for Simeone's side.
