Arsenal see asking price almost triple – €40-50m hardball over January exit

Monza have tripled their asking price for Varela to €40-50m after Arsenal's early interest; Barcelona and Napoli also watching the 21-year-old striker.

Arsenal were among the first Premier League clubs to enquire about Gustavo Varela, but Monza have dramatically raised their valuation for the 21-year-old striker. The Portuguese forward was valued at around €15m just days ago, but the Italian club are now reportedly seeking €40-50m after interest from multiple European sides.

Varela, who arrived at Monza from Benfica last summer for €2m plus bonuses, has become Serie A's leading scorer this season. He is tied to Monza until 2030 with no release clause, giving the club significant negotiating power. Barcelona and Napoli have also joined Arsenal in monitoring the situation.

Monza have indicated they do not want to sell in January despite sitting 18th in Serie A, meaning any interested club would need to pay a substantial premium to complete a deal. Benfica retain 20% of any future transfer profit and hold the right to match offers, though the Portuguese club would struggle to compete financially at the reported price.
