JJ Gabriel development sparks rule change demand as Man United await confirmation

Real Madrid have reportedly reached verbal agreement to sign 16-year-old academy prospect JJ Gabriel, who remains a Manchester United player; the move has sparked calls for rule changes.

Real Madrid have reportedly verbally agreed to sign Manchester United academy prospect JJ Gabriel, who is still registered to the English club. The 16-year-old, who joined United's academy at age 11 after spells at Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham, is eligible to move abroad as an EU passport holder with FIFA approval.

United are entitled to training compensation estimated at £100,000–£300,000 and are considering legal action against any European club that signs Gabriel. The player submitted a formal request to cancel his registration in September but remains on United's books.

Paul Merson has called for rule changes to prevent young academy players from leaving for overseas clubs, arguing that academies deserve protection after investing years in player development. He cited similar cases including Rio Ngumoha's departure from Chelsea.
