The Sarabia era gets underway with Eder in the stands

Eder Sarabia begins his tenure as Espanyol manager after Manolo González was sacked following three consecutive Copa del Rey defeats; Sarabia will miss today's match against Deportivo due to a suspension from last season.

Espanyol have appointed Eder Sarabia as their new manager, replacing Manolo González who was dismissed ten days ago following the club's third consecutive Copa del Rey embarrassment — a 4-3 loss to Segunda Federación side Sestao. González had been a stabilising figure during a difficult period in the club's history, overseeing their 2024 promotion and two subsequent survival campaigns.

Sarabia, chosen by sporting director Monchi for his contrasting style, faced initial hostility from Espanyol supporters due to comments he made against them while managing Gerard Piqué's Andorra. During his presentation, Sarabia apologised to anyone offended by those remarks, helping to smooth relations with the fanbase.

Sarabia will watch today's home match against Deportivo from the stands due to a suspension carried over from last season, with assistant Jon López taking charge. Espanyol are seeking their first home league win since beating Levante 3-0 on opening day, though they enter the match in improved spirits after interim manager Sergio García secured a 1-0 victory at Villarreal that lifted them out of the relegation zone.
