Trafford aims for England spot after tough year at Man City

Trafford reflects on difficult season at Manchester City after joining Leeds United for regular playing time; won League Cup and FA Cup but started just four Premier League matches.

James Trafford has opened up about his frustrating 2024–25 season at Manchester City, describing the lack of playing time as "a terrible feeling." The 24-year-old goalkeeper returned to City from Burnley in July 2025 but found himself sidelined after Gianluigi Donnarumma arrived from Paris Saint-Germain and became the first-choice keeper. Trafford made only four Premier League starts across the campaign.

Despite the disappointment, Trafford has found perspective. He won the League Cup and FA Cup with City, starting both finals at Wembley, and credits the experience with helping him develop as a player. "I've learned an incredible amount, improved, and won two trophies," he said. "What an incredible year." He also featured in England's 2026 World Cup squad, though did not play.

Trafford joined Leeds United over the summer to secure regular football and has started all nine Championship matches so far, keeping three clean sheets. He is now focused on helping Leeds return to European football and pursuing his ambition of becoming England's number one goalkeeper.
