Man United have 7 free agent options to replace Michael Carrick and save millions

Carrick's job is in serious jeopardy after defeats to Como and Bournemouth; United could turn to free-agent managers including Howe, Conte, Nagelsmann, McKenna or Southgate.

Michael Carrick's position as Manchester United head coach is under severe pressure following a dismal run of results. After guiding United to third place last season and earning the permanent role in the summer with a £153m transfer budget focused on midfield, the team has struggled badly this campaign. A 4-1 Champions League loss to Como was followed by a 3-0 Premier League defeat at home to Bournemouth, leaving United near the bottom of the table and prompting chants of "sacked in the morning" from visiting supporters.

Should United decide to sack Carrick, several high-profile free agents are available. Former former Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, who led the Magpies to Champions League football and won the Carabao Cup in 2025, has emerged as a leading contender. Antonio Conte, the former Chelsea and Spurs boss who won Serie A with Napoli this year, has stated he remains open to future projects but is not in talks with United. Julian Nagelsmann, who stepped down as Germany head coach after their 2026 World Cup campaign, is also without a club, as is Kieran McKenna, the former United coach who secured consecutive promotions with Ipswich Town before departing in June. Gareth Southgate, who resigned as England manager in July 2024, has also been mentioned despite limited club management experience.
