Chelsea injury update: Joao Pedro, Emi Martinez and Pep Chavarria latest news and return dates

Joao Pedro's injury severity unknown pending Sunday scans; Emi Martinez recovering from jaw surgery (weeks out); Pep Chavarria expected back for Liverpool or Manchester United.

Chelsea face a mounting injury crisis ahead of Wednesday's Carabao Cup trip to Liverpool and Saturday's Premier League visit from Manchester United.

Joao Pedro was surprisingly absent from the squad for Saturday's 2-0 loss to Tottenham after picking up an injury in training on Friday. Manager Xabi Alonso said the Brazilian striker has fluid buildup that prevented initial scans, with assessments due Sunday to determine severity. Pedro has already dealt with knee trouble this season, missing the Brentford match and seeing a specialist during the international break.

First-choice goalkeeper Emi Martinez suffered a fractured jaw in a head clash during last weekend's win at Everton and required surgery. Alonso expects him sidelined for "a few weeks, hopefully less than more," with deputy Mike Penders stepping in. Left wing-back Pep Chavarria, who missed both Everton and Tottenham with a training knock, has returned to partial team training and should be available for either the Liverpool or Manchester United fixture. Reece James, Jamie Gittens and Emmanuel Emegha also remain sidelined, while Cole Palmer faces a suspension after two yellow cards against Tottenham.
