Michael Carrick holds meeting with Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes

Carrick and Fernandes held clear-the-air talks on Tuesday after the captain was dropped following his public questioning of the manager's tactics.

Michael Carrick met with Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes on Tuesday for clear-the-air talks after a week of tension between the pair.

Fernandes was an unused substitute in United's 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth last weekend, losing his starting place after questioning Carrick's tactical approach following the Champions League loss to Como. The midfielder was substituted in that match and visibly frustrated, later suggesting in a post-match interview that the staff's decision not to press man-to-man left space behind. When asked directly if Carrick got tactics wrong, Fernandes said it was for the manager to assess.

Carrick responded during his post-match press conference, and subsequently dropped Fernandes for Bournemouth despite playing down the situation. The United board considered Carrick's future after the Bournemouth loss but decided to back him. Following Tuesday's meeting, Carrick considers the matter closed. Club figures have noted Fernandes returning to his "best version" after a challenging week that included a burglary at his family home while United played in Italy.
