'He could be happier' - why is Estevao becoming Chelsea's forgotten man?

Estevao has managed just 172 minutes this season under Xabi Alonso, with Pedro Neto's form and the intensity of English football limiting his opportunities in the Chelsea attack.

Estevao's promising start at Chelsea has given way to a frustrating campaign under new manager Xabi Alonso. The 19-year-old Brazilian, who scored the winner against Liverpool last October, has struggled to break into the side this season, accumulating just 172 minutes across all competitions. He has failed to start any of the eight Premier League matches since Alonso's arrival and was notably unused even as a substitute in Wednesday's Carabao Cup penalty shootout loss to Liverpool at Anfield, despite Alonso making five substitutions.

Alonso has defended his decision to leave Estevao out, suggesting the forward is still adapting to the physical demands of English football. "He could be happier. He wants to play," Alonso said after the Liverpool defeat. "I'm sure Estevao will have his moment, it is my responsibility." The manager added that the season is long and there will be opportunities for everyone.

Much of Estevao's lack of playing time stems from the impressive form of Pedro Neto, who has started seven of Chelsea's eight Premier League matches this season. Neto, who was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia earlier in the campaign, has thrived on the right wing—Estevao's favoured position—scoring four goals in 11 appearances.
