How Bayern Munich fell in love with Harry Kane

Kane won the Ballon d'Or, becoming the first Englishman in 25 years to claim the award, and Bayern Munich are preparing to announce a new contract extension.

Harry Kane returned to the Allianz Arena following his Ballon d'Or win, becoming only the fifth Englishman and first in a quarter-century to claim the award. Bayern Munich gave him a guard of honour, though Kane admitted feeling embarrassed by the tributes. He did not play in Bayern's 6-1 cup victory over Magdeburg but was visibly moved by the occasion, joking with media about his children playing with the trophy and responding to suggestions he should be knighted.

Bayern legend Lothar Matthaus reflected on how Kane has exceeded expectations since his £100m arrival from Tottenham. "This was the best investment that Bayern Munich have made in the last 20 years," Matthaus said, noting that few predicted Kane would win the Ballon d'Or at his age. The striker has impressed not only with his goal-scoring but his all-round play, operating as a playmaker and dropping deep to build attacks rather than remaining static in the box.

Kane's success has vindicated Bayern's investment, which even former club president Uli Hoeness initially questioned. The club is preparing to announce a new contract extension, and Kane is set to feature in Der Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.
