Sometimes managers need sacking for own good - Neville

Neville says managers sometimes need sacking for their own good as United persist with under-pressure Carrick after a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth.

Gary Neville has weighed in on Manchester United's decision to keep Michael Carrick as manager despite mounting pressure following a 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth that left the club 16th in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation zone.

Neville suggested the club's indecision and lack of planning led to the decision to retain Carrick, saying "sometimes a manager needs sacking for their own good." He drew on his own experience at Valencia, where he felt relief at being dismissed. Carrick's position had already been precarious after captain Bruno Fernandes publicly questioned his tactics following a 4-1 Champions League defeat at Como. Fernandes was dropped for the Bournemouth match but the pair have since held talks to clear the air.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher suggested Carrick would privately welcome being relieved of his duties, while Roy Keane noted the players know Carrick's departure is imminent. United have reportedly explored replacements including Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann. Carrick will remain in charge for Saturday's trip to Chelsea.
