McInnes defends 'big part' player Fernandez

McInnes defended Fernandez after criticism following Wednesday's 2-2 draw with Hearts, saying the centre-back has been crucial to Rangers' better performances this season.

Rangers manager Derek McInnes has defended centre-back Emmanuel Fernandez following criticism of his display in Wednesday's 2-2 Scottish Premiership draw with Hearts at Tynecastle.

The 25-year-old Nigeria international has made some high-profile mistakes this season, but McInnes pushed back at detractors, pointing out that Fernandez was outstanding in Saturday's match against St Johnstone and has been integral to Rangers' improved performances. "I only get asked about Fernandez when he has a poor game," McInnes said. "Last night wasn't on Manny Fernandez, last night was a collective."

McInnes is now focused on Saturday's Scottish League Cup semi-final against Aberdeen at Hampden, where Rangers are favourites despite Aberdeen's recent poor form. He acknowledged the unpredictability of semi-finals and praised Aberdeen manager Stephen Robinson, expressing sympathy for the pressure he faces with the Dons having lost three of their past four league matches.
