Xabi Alonso shows affection for Estevao ahead of Manchester United clash

Alonso backs Estevao to play more, saying the Brazilian will get minutes and matches as the season progresses and he adapts to Chelsea's style.

Chelsea face Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a crucial fixture for both sides. Chelsea seek redemption after their EFL Cup elimination to Liverpool, while United need three points to avoid slipping further down the table and to keep Carrick's position secure.

Chelsea have struggled recently despite a strong start under Xabi Alonso, winning just two of their last six matches. The absence of injured João Félix, who has five goals in seven games this season, has affected their attacking output. After losing 0-2 to Tottenham in the London derby last weekend, questions have been raised about Alonso's team selection.

Estevao, the young Brazilian signed two summers ago, has featured sparingly under Alonso, playing just 172 minutes across 11 matches. At his Friday press conference, Alonso addressed concerns about the winger's limited playing time, saying: "Of course he will play. The season is long and there will be moments for everyone. He will have his minutes, his matches. We are still at the beginning of the season. It is not a question of attitude, it is a question of the start of the season. He is a great guy, he is adapting, but we are still in October and it will be important." Alonso also confirmed goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, sidelined two weeks ago, may need to wear a mask if fit to play.
