Xabi Alonso explains why Estevao Willian isn't playing for Chelsea

Alonso says Estevao's limited playing time is due to tactical context and the early stage of the season, not attitude issues, and expects him to feature more as the campaign progresses.

Xabi Alonso has defended his decision to limit Estevao Willian's playing time at Chelsea, insisting the Brazilian's lack of starts is tactical rather than a reflection of his ability or commitment. Estevao has made just six Premier League appearances and played only seven per cent of available minutes since returning from a hamstring injury.

Alonso explained in his pre-match press conference that the decision stems from "the context of the games" and the early stage of the season. "It's a process, for the team, for Este and myself," Alonso said. "I'm sure in the season he'll have his games, he'll have his minutes. It's not about attitude, it's about the context of the games."

The manager acknowledged that every player wants to be on the pitch and took responsibility for the selection calls, but stressed that squad rotation is part of football. Alonso also confirmed injury updates: Maxence Lacroix will miss several weeks after picking up a knock against Liverpool, while Moises Caicedo is fit and available. Emi Martinez has a chance to return before the international break.
