Carrick's last chance? The fixes Man Utd may need at Chelsea

Carrick faces Chelsea on Saturday with United winless in eight games; tactical issues with pressing and defensive shape are key problems to solve.

Michael Carrick remains under pressure at Manchester United after eight games without a win. The analysis identifies two critical tactical problems: United's high press is poorly coordinated, winning the ball high only 10 times from 52 attempts this season with no goals resulting, while their defensive shape lacks compactness and structure, leaving gaps between lines that opponents exploit.

The piece highlights tensions between Carrick and captain Bruno Fernandes following Fernandes' benching against Bournemouth, though clear-the-air talks this week appear to have resolved the issue. Carrick has reaffirmed Fernandes remains captain and the club can move forward together.

With Chelsea away on Saturday, Carrick must establish a more disciplined defensive structure similar to the Leeds performance, improve coordination in pressing, and restore Fernandes' influence in midfield. Until United can defend as a cohesive unit and execute their tactical approach consistently, their confusion will persist.
