Manchester United stick with Michael Carrick ahead of Chelsea matchup as dressing-room discord fuels crisis

Carrick stays as manager despite eight-game winless run and public player dissent, with Bruno Fernandes recently benched after questioning tactics.

Michael Carrick will remain Manchester United manager for Saturday's trip to Chelsea despite mounting pressure. United have won just one of their last eight matches across all competitions, conceding 15 goals while scoring six. The crisis has deepened off the pitch, with defender Lisandro Martinez publicly questioning the club's ambition after a Champions League loss to Atlético Madrid, and captain Bruno Fernandes speaking out about tactics following a defeat to Como. Fernandes was subsequently benched, though Carrick confirmed he will retain the captaincy. The manager held meetings about his future but has been retained for the Chelsea fixture at Stamford Bridge on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. ET. The article suggests Carrick's authority has been undermined by the public player dissent and the benching of his captain, and questions whether he can stabilize the club if they concede early against Chelsea. The broader analysis points to systemic issues at United since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure, with eight permanent managers failing to deliver sustained success despite significant investment.
