"What happened to Jesús de Miguel is an absolute tragedy"

Tenerife player Jesús de Miguel has died; Portugal manager Eder Sarabia's presentation was postponed as a mark of respect.

Tenerife player Jesús de Miguel has died in a tragedy that has shocked Spanish football. Eder Sarabia's presentation as Espanyol's new manager, originally scheduled for Tuesday, was postponed out of respect.

At the rescheduled press conference, Espanyol director general Monchi offered condolences to De Miguel's family and Tenerife. Sarabia added his own tribute, saying "when we play, whenever that is, let's give him an unforgettable tribute as he deserves." He also sent support to Jesús Owono, noting the difficult time the Tenerife squad is experiencing.

When asked whether this weekend's fixtures should be suspended, Sarabia was cautious, saying the decision was not his to make. He reflected on the incident at Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium, noting that despite more reckless and aggressive actions occurring in football before, nothing like this had happened. "It's an absolute tragedy," he said, emphasizing the need for medical staff, coaching teams and players to remain especially vigilant.
