Request for football-free weekend in Spain after well-attended funeral of De Miguel

Spanish players' union calls for a football-free weekend following the death of Tenerife player Jesús de Miguel, who died after a collision during a match.

Jesús de Miguel, a Tenerife player, died on Tuesday following a collision with an opposing goalkeeper. His funeral was held on Thursday and was attended by numerous figures from Spanish football, including national team coach Luis de la Fuente, Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, and Atlético Madrid president Miguel Ángel Gil Marín.

Following the ceremony, the Spanish players' union (AFE) issued a statement calling for a football-free weekend across Spain's professional leagues. The union said it had consulted with players at all levels, who unanimously reported that "the psychological and human conditions are lacking to continue the competition under normal circumstances." Matches involving Tenerife and FC Andorra, De Miguel's club and the opposing team at the time of the fatal collision, had already been postponed, along with midweek cup fixtures.
