Newcastle 'concerned' about Harvey Barnes, he could cost Matthias Jaissle his job - expert

Barnes' inconsistency is symptomatic of Newcastle's wider problems this season, with pressure mounting on manager Jaissle despite the club's stated commitment to back him.

Newcastle United are growing concerned about Harvey Barnes' performances as the club struggles with inconsistency under manager Matthias Jaissle. The 28-year-old winger has scored four goals and provided two assists in 12 games this season, but those contributions have come in just four appearances, highlighting his unreliability.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Barnes epitomizes Newcastle's broader issues. "When he's on it, he can be one of the best wingers in the Premier League," Brown said, "but those performances might come once in every six or seven games, maybe even more than that." He noted the significant drop-off compared to Anthony Gordon and pointed to downgrades across multiple positions following summer departures.

Jaissle's position has come under scrutiny after Newcastle won just one of their last five games and three of nine in the league. The Magpies were eliminated from the cup by Everton before losing to them in the Premier League. However, the club has indicated it remains committed to the manager, hoping he can inspire a resurgence and prove the decision to replace Eddie Howe was correct.
