Can the power of Old Trafford and vibes save Michael Carrick at Man United?

Carrick's job secured for now after United's 3-2 Champions League comeback against Roma, but a run of poor form leaves his future uncertain.

Manchester United's remarkable 3-2 comeback victory over Roma in the Champions League has given manager Michael Carrick a reprieve after weeks of speculation about his future. United had been languishing 24th in the 36-team group stage before the turnaround, with the club's recent form described as relegation-battle standard.

Carrick has already survived two previous stays of execution this season—after the 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth and Saturday's defeat at Chelsea—with sporting director Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada seemingly uncertain about their next move. The comeback at Old Trafford, powered by the atmosphere and history of the ground, has bought him time through the international break.

However, the underlying issues remain stark. United were on course to go 10 games without a win in a single season for the first time since Carrick was born, and could be bottom of the Premier League by the time they face Aston Villa on Sunday. The article notes that while the players showed they have not given up on Carrick during the frenetic final 35 minutes against Roma, the broader pattern of underperformance persists. Historical precedent offers little comfort: previous United managers including David Moyes and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer secured similar European comebacks only to be sacked weeks later.
