Why Man Utd's Roma comeback has echoes of Mourinho and Solskjaer

After beating Roma 3-2, Carrick warns against overconfidence; United face Aston Villa next with their Premier League title hopes hanging by a thread.

Manchester United's dramatic 3-2 Champions League comeback victory against Roma at Old Trafford lifted the mood after nine games without a win, but interim manager Michael Carrick is urging caution. "It's one win, so we're not getting too carried away with things, but it was an important win," Carrick said.

The article draws parallels to two previous occasions when United staged similar comebacks under pressure. In December 2018, Jose Mourinho's side beat Newcastle 3-2 after trailing 2-0, with Juan Mata and Alexis Sanchez scoring the goals that sparked the turnaround. However, Mourinho was sacked 10 weeks later after a run of poor results. Similarly, in October 2021, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's United beat Atalanta 3-2 from two goals down, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring the winner, but Solskjaer was dismissed three weeks later following a 5-0 home defeat to Liverpool and a 4-1 loss at Watford.

Neither Mourinho nor Solskjaer could build on the momentum from their epic victories. United now sit precariously in the Premier League table and could drop to the bottom before facing Aston Villa on Sunday, making Carrick's call for perspective understandable given the club's precarious position.
