Stefan Borson drops Unai Emery bombshell after Aston Villa latest

Stefan Borson says Emery's only realistic exit from Villa would be to Real Madrid or Barcelona, despite his imminent contract extension to 2029.

Unai Emery is set to sign a new contract at Aston Villa extending through summer 2029, but former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson has suggested his future remains open to the right opportunity. Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson believes the only plausible move away from Villa Park would be back to Spain, specifically to Real Madrid or Barcelona. "Those clubs are very hard to turn down," Borson said, while acknowledging that Emery has built something special at Villa and has little reason to leave otherwise.

Emery has transformed Villa's fortunes this season after a difficult summer that saw the club sell key players while competing in the Champions League. Villa currently sit 10th in the Premier League and sixth in the Champions League, with Opta giving them a 0.36 per cent chance of winning the Premier League title and 2.65 per cent for Champions League glory. The 55-year-old had been linked with the Manchester United job, but Villa's owners are signalling their intent by offering him one of Europe's most lucrative managerial contracts.
