Man Utd players set to return to training with Carrick's future still uncertain

Carrick's future at United remains uncertain after Monday talks between Berrada and Wilcox following the 3-0 Bournemouth defeat; players return to training Tuesday.

Manchester United's players are set to return to training at Carrington on Tuesday, but uncertainty surrounds whether Michael Carrick will remain as head coach. The decision comes after Sunday's 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth, which extended United's winless run to eight games across all competitions. Chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox held talks on Monday at the training base to discuss next steps, with the club hierarchy—including Sir Jim Ratcliffe—yet to decide Carrick's fate.

Carrick's position has become increasingly precarious. United are 16th in the Premier League table with just seven points from seven games, one point above the relegation zone, representing the club's worst-ever start to a league season. The defeat to Bournemouth saw Carrick drop captain Bruno Fernandes to the bench following tactical disagreements after the 4-1 Champions League loss to Como.

Carrick was appointed in January 2026 and initially impressed, winning 12 of 17 matches to secure third place and Champions League qualification, earning a new contract through 2028. However, the current campaign has seen a dramatic reversal in fortunes.
