Sir Jim Ratcliffe flying in for Chelsea vs Man United in ultimate Michael Carrick test

Ratcliffe will attend Saturday's Chelsea match as Carrick faces mounting pressure with United 16th in the Premier League after one win in eight games.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe will fly to London on Wednesday to watch Manchester United's Premier League clash with Chelsea on Saturday afternoon at Stamford Bridge. The visit comes as manager Michael Carrick's future grows increasingly uncertain following a disastrous start to the season, with United sitting 16th after just one win from their opening eight games. Their form extends across competitions: one win in three in the Champions League and elimination from the Carabao Cup following a 3-2 loss to Brighton.

Ratcliffe's presence will intensify scrutiny on Carrick, who has seen the board demonstrate ruthlessness with previous managers Erik ten Hag (sacked November 2024) and Ruben Amorim (dismissed January 2025). Sources claim Ratcliffe could consider a broader overhaul of the club hierarchy, potentially including CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox. Club legend Nicky Butt has criticised the decision-making structure, arguing there are "too many learner drivers" at the club following Dan Ashworth's departure in December 2024.
