Manchester United's plan for sacking their last manager is not available this time

Manchester United cannot repeat their caretaker strategy used after sacking Amorim because Fletcher's backroom staff are now tied to Carrick's setup.

Manchester United face a managerial dilemma if they decide to sack Michael Carrick, as the contingency plan that worked after Ruben Amorim's dismissal in January is no longer available.

When Amorim was sacked, Darren Fletcher stepped in as caretaker manager, supported by Jonny Evans, Travis Binnion, and Craig Mawson. However, those same staff members are now part of Carrick's backroom team. If United were to sack Carrick without removing his assistant Steve Holland and the coaching staff, there would be no clean break from the previous regime—making Fletcher's appointment pointless.

The alternative of sacking both Carrick and Holland to bring in Fletcher as caretaker would require retaining Evans, Binnion, and Mawson to run training and prepare tactically. Fletcher, who has expressed a desire to enter management, was overlooked for the permanent role in favour of Carrick and would likely be reluctant to step in again as a temporary solution. This structural constraint means United would need to have a permanent successor lined up and ready to start immediately if they decide to remove Carrick, significantly narrowing their options in an already limited candidate pool.
