Bruno Fernandes remains Man United captain as Michael Carrick reveals talks

Fernandes retains the captaincy after clear-the-air talks with Carrick and is expected to return for Chelsea.

Bruno Fernandes has kept the Manchester United captaincy following discussions with manager Michael Carrick. The Portugal international had criticised Carrick's tactics after United's 4-1 defeat to Como and was subsequently omitted from the squad for Sunday's 3-0 loss to Bournemouth, with Carrick describing it as a "pure football" decision despite bringing on four other substitutes. Harry Maguire wore the armband in that match, but Carrick has confirmed Fernandes remains captain and is expected to return for Saturday's trip to Chelsea.

Carrick praised Fernandes' commitment and leadership, saying "He's an important player for this group" and "He's fully committed to this football club, he's fully committed to making things better." The manager described the decision to retain Fernandes as captain as straightforward, stating "There's no decision to be made on that." Fernandes, who was appointed captain by Erik ten Hag in 2023, has been described as back to his best in training this week.
