Man United latest: 3 Michael Carrick replacements agreed upon as manager told how to save job

Carrick survives the axe after Bournemouth loss and faces Chelsea on Saturday; Scholes and Butt back Emery, McKenna and Keane as potential replacements.

Manchester United have decided to retain Michael Carrick as manager despite a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth that prompted emergency talks between CEO Omar Berrada and sporting director Jason Wilcox. The 45-year-old will remain in the dugout for Saturday's Premier League clash against Chelsea, with the club citing a shortage of suitable replacements.

Carrick's first full season has been difficult: eight Premier League games yielding just one win, four defeats and three draws, plus exits from the Carabao Cup and two Champions League losses. However, United legends Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt have weighed in on potential successors. When presented with 11 candidates on their podcast, they reached unanimous agreement on three: Unai Emery, Kieran McKenna and Roy Keane. Scholes and Butt were divided on Antonio Conte and Gareth Southgate, while rejecting Eddie Howe, Daniel Farke, Cesc Fabregas and Julian Nagelsmann.

Roy Keane has warned Carrick that results must improve immediately. Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Keane said the manager and his coaching staff "have to grow a pair and start getting results on Saturday" at Chelsea, adding that they are "lucky boys to be still involved at Manchester United."
