Kane wins Ballon d'Or by narrow margin over Mbappé

Kane won by just 28 points over Mbappé, the second-smallest margin in Ballon d'Or history; only Sammer (1996) and Charlton (1966) won by a single point.

Harry Kane won the 2026 Ballon d'Or on 26 October with a narrow 28-point victory over Kylian Mbappé, making it one of the closest contests in the award's history. The Bayern Munich striker, who scored 61 goals for the club and 73 including international matches, became the first English winner since Michael Owen in 2001. Kane's exceptional goal-scoring efficiency was rewarded despite winning only the Bundesliga title as a major trophy.

Mbappé finished second despite outstanding personal statistics: he was La Liga's top scorer, the Champions League's leading goalscorer, and holds the all-time World Cup scoring record. However, his lack of major trophies cost him the award. The 28-point gap is the second-smallest in Ballon d'Or history; only Matthias Sammer's one-point victory over Ronaldo in 1996 and Bobby Charlton's one-point win over Eusébio in 1966 were closer. In the 21st century, Lionel Messi's 2019 win over Virgil van Dijk by 7 points remains the tightest margin.
