The Mourinho Method

Analysis comparing Flick's attacking philosophy with Mourinho's pragmatic defensive approach, arguing Barcelona could benefit from adopting some of the latter's tactical discipline.

The article examines Barcelona's tactical approach under Flick, contrasting it with José Mourinho's more pragmatic, defensively-minded methodology. The author argues that while Barcelona's attacking DNA is admirable, the club has become too rigid in its philosophy and could learn from Mourinho's emphasis on defensive solidity, physical intensity, and collective sacrifice.

The piece highlights specific weaknesses in Flick's system: an overly aggressive defensive line deployed throughout matches regardless of context, and defensive vulnerabilities exposed in recent games against Real Madrid, PSG, and Inter Milan in the Champions League. The author notes Barcelona lacks a reliable centre-back since Iñigo Martínez's departure and doesn't have pure full-backs beyond Balde.

The article suggests Flick's method could benefit from incorporating elements of Mourinho's approach: players showing physicality and intensity, set-piece mastery, and psychological control of matches through press conferences and environmental management. The conclusion is that Barcelona's tactical discourse needs reconsideration rather than unwavering adherence to one philosophy.
