Man United latest: Michael Carrick fights for future as Bruno Fernandes decision made for Chelsea trip

Carrick survives the axe after crisis talks and will manage United at Chelsea despite an eight-game winless run; Bruno Fernandes recalled after clear-the-air talks.

Michael Carrick has survived the threat of the sack and will remain Manchester United manager for the trip to Chelsea in the Premier League. Following the 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth last week, Carrick appeared set to be dismissed, but held crisis talks with the United hierarchy and has been given another chance to end their eight-game winless run in all competitions.

Carrick is set to recall captain Bruno Fernandes after holding clear-the-air talks with him. Fernandes was left on the bench last weekend following criticism of Carrick's tactical approach. The club has sounded out Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann as potential replacements, but Carrick will get at least one more match to prove himself.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso also faces pressure following their home defeat to Tottenham and Carabao Cup exit against Liverpool. Joao Pedro remains sidelined through injury, though Cole Palmer returns from suspension. Maxence Lacroix is ruled out for a few weeks with a hamstring injury, while Mike Penders continues in goal due to Emi Martinez's broken jaw.
