Manchester United: Michael Carrick confirms Bruno Fernandes captaincy decision for Chelsea clash

Carrick has resolved his public dispute with Fernandes and confirmed the midfielder will retain the captaincy and return for Chelsea.

Bruno Fernandes will remain Manchester United captain after Michael Carrick drew a line under their recent public falling out. The Portuguese midfielder had criticised Carrick's tactical approach following United's 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como, prompting the head coach to respond with comments about players not running hard enough. Carrick subsequently dropped Fernandes for Sunday's 3-0 loss to Bournemouth, but the pair have since held talks to clear the air during the week.

Despite the spat and questions over his authority, Carrick stated there was "no decision to be made" on the captaincy. "Between us, we have got to make a difference, we have got to push things in a different direction," Carrick said. "He is fully committed to this football club, he is fully committed to make things better. He is the one that has led the team so well for many a game and for many a year, and he will continue to do that." Fernandes will be available for selection for Saturday's trip to Chelsea after being rested against Bournemouth.
