Manchester United decide not to sack Michael Carrick after Chelsea defeat

Carrick will stay on through the international break after crisis talks, despite a 2-0 loss to Chelsea extending United's winless run to nine matches.

Manchester United have decided to retain Michael Carrick as head coach following their 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, which extended their winless run to nine matches across all competitions. Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer scored for the Blues, while Lisandro Martinez was sent off for two bookable offences.

According to The Athletic, United's leadership held crisis talks last week after heavy defeats to Como and Bournemouth and agreed to keep Carrick in post until the November international break, when another assessment will be made. The decision means Carrick survived what appeared to be an inevitable sacking after the 3-0 loss at home to Bournemouth.

Despite the frustration from travelling fans directed at the club's hierarchy and players, supporters sang Carrick's name and applauded him at full-time. Carrick will now lead United into Champions League action against Roma before a home fixture against Aston Villa next weekend.
