Michael Carrick is facing a familiar Man United problem – but Chelsea clash could offer a way out

Carrick faces a familiar Man United crisis — loss of dressing room control — ahead of Saturday's Chelsea clash, with his future uncertain despite being spared the sack.

Michael Carrick heads to Chelsea on Saturday facing a critical juncture in his Manchester United tenure. Despite widespread belief the club made the wrong decision keeping him in post, he remains in the role, though sources suggest the connection with the squad that existed last season has evaporated. The manager appears unable to get a reaction from the players, a pattern that has afflicted all his modern predecessors — from David Moyes through Erik ten Hag — when they "lost" the team.

Carrick is not a toxic presence like Jose Mourinho became, but the specific problem is how difficult this dynamic is to reverse once it takes hold. The collapse against Como and Bournemouth exemplified the issue. Some insiders suggest the squad is simply drained and low, unable to cope with current challenges, or a combination of factors. The Chelsea match could offer vital clarity on whether this situation can be salvaged or has become terminal.
