Milan-Ferencvaros VAR review: Schnyder and the red card for Yusuf

Referee Schnyder's red card to Yusuf was harsh but defensible; the yellow to Cisse was excessive, though he correctly allowed Ferencvaros's opening goal.

Swiss referee Urs Schnyder (rated 6/10) oversaw Milan's 0-2 Europa League defeat to Ferencvaros at San Siro. He was correct to allow Ferencvaros's first goal by Joseph after Torriani fouled Zachariassen moments before the strike — a clear penalty that the referee did not whistle, letting play continue correctly.

However, Schnyder's disciplinary decisions were questionable. The yellow card shown to Cisse was excessive; replays showed Cisse reached the ball first. More controversially, after a VAR review by Fähndrich, Schnyder issued a red card to Yusuf for striking Gila with his arm when the ball was away. While the contact was not violent, the punishment was overly rigid and exemplary — modern refereeing typically weighs the actual consequence and force of such gestures rather than punishing the attempt alone.
