Carrick's future in question, Lacey decision and UEFA fine fears - Manchester United Notebook

Carrick's job security improved after beating Roma but remains under threat; a loss to Villa could seal his fate.

Michael Carrick bought breathing space with Manchester United's dramatic Champions League win over Roma on Tuesday, but his future remains precarious ahead of Sunday's match against Aston Villa.

Carrick had faced intense scrutiny and was widely expected to be sacked after back-to-back defeats to Como and Bournemouth by three-goal margins. The club's decision-makers have considered alternatives including Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler, Unai Emery at Villa Park, Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann, though compensation fees and reluctance to leave make a change unlikely in the immediate term. The November international break is seen as the most realistic window for a managerial change if needed.

A second consecutive win this weekend would likely secure Carrick's position through the trip to Anfield after the break, but another defeat could reaffirm doubts about whether he is the right man for the job. United face midweek games for three consecutive weeks after the international break, limiting opportunities for a change until mid-December.

Separately, 19-year-old Shea Lacey's impressive cameo against Roma has sparked questions about his international future, with Republic of Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrimsson acknowledging his Irish connection through his father, though Lacey remains in the England Under-20 squad.
