Sources: Michael Carrick sack update ahead of Man United clash

Carrick faces the sack if Manchester United suffer a heavy defeat to Aston Villa this weekend, with sources indicating one more loss could end his tenure.

Michael Carrick remains under intense pressure at Manchester United after a disastrous start to the season. The Red Devils have won just one of their opening nine Premier League games and sit hovering above the relegation zone in 15th place.

Carrick bought himself temporary respite with a 3-2 Champions League victory over Roma in midweek, but sources have told Football Insider he is effectively one defeat away from dismissal. The critical test comes this weekend when Aston Villa visit Old Trafford. A heavy loss could trigger the board to act, particularly during the international break that follows.

Unai Emery has been mentioned as a potential successor, though he is currently negotiating a new contract at Villa Park. Among Premier League managers under pressure, Carrick leads the betting odds for the next sacking at 5/4, ahead of Crystal Palace's Pierre Sage and Sunderland's Regis Le Bris.
