Man United handed worrying Antonio Conte update as Michael Carrick laughs off claim

William Gallas warns United against Conte, saying the Italian's demanding style won't suit the current squad; Carrick laughs off comparisons to Ferguson's 1990 turnaround.

Manchester United have been linked with Antonio Conte as pressure mounts on interim manager Michael Carrick, but former Premier League defender William Gallas has cautioned against the appointment. Gallas told SeatPick that Conte's rigid tactical demands may not work with the current generation of players, arguing that modern football requires compromise between manager and squad rather than players simply adapting to the boss. He also criticised United's recruitment strategy, saying the club has signed players below the standard required for a club of their stature.

Carrick's position has been slightly eased by United's midweek 3-2 comeback win over AS Roma in the Champions League, which drew comparisons to Sir Alex Ferguson's famous 1990 FA Cup victory over Nottingham Forest that saved his job. However, Carrick dismissed suggestions of history repeating itself, saying the Roma win was "one moment in time" and that success would take time to build. United sit 17th in the Premier League, seven games without a win, and face Aston Villa on Sunday.
