Spanish press assesses De Jong after 300th Barcelona appearance

De Jong reached 300 Barcelona appearances as a substitute against Aston Villa; Spanish press scrutinised his record of 20 goals and 31 assists, questioning whether he has fulfilled expectations since 2019.

Frenkie de Jong marked his 300th appearance for Barcelona on Tuesday night, coming off the bench in the Champions League match against Aston Villa. The milestone prompted Spanish media to assess his time at the club.

Diario AS highlighted the midfielder's statistics: 20 goals and 31 assists across 300 games. While De Jong was signed as Sergio Busquets' successor, he has never truly filled that role. The outlet noted his popularity has hit a low point since arriving in summer 2019, compounded by a knee injury and the arrival of Rodri. Despite his technical qualities and ability to dribble and pass through defences, De Jong has stalled in his development, lacking the consistency of a metronome like Pedri.

Other outlets praised his performance against Aston Villa. Diario SPORT said he brought calm and control to Barcelona's play in the second half. La Vanguardia called it a dynamic display, while Mundo Deportivo suggested his performance carried a defiant edge—a response to criticism, showing he belongs in the starting XI. De Jong himself dismissed the noise, telling Mundo Deportivo: "I feel great, very strong, enthusiastic and very motivated. I know there's always some rumour around me, especially when I don't play or when I'm injured. But now I'm very fit and we'll see what happens."
