Paul Scholes' eerily accurate Man United prediction resurfaces in worrying Michael Carrick omen

Scholes warned after a similar 3-2 comeback against Atalanta in 2021 that United's defensive frailty would be exposed by top sides; Liverpool thrashed them 5-0 days later.

Paul Scholes has resurfaced with an eerily prescient warning from October 2021 after Manchester United beat Roma 3-2 in the Champions League on Tuesday, coming back from two goals down. Scholes had criticised United's performance after an identical comeback against Atalanta, saying the midfield was "all over the place" and warning that better opposition would punish them. He specifically predicted Liverpool would exploit those weaknesses on the following Sunday — and four days later, Liverpool won 5-0 at Old Trafford, marking the beginning of the end for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The parallels are striking: Gian Piero Gasperini was again the visiting manager left stunned by a 3-2 collapse, the midfield cracks were masked by emotional momentum, and the euphoria of a European comeback threatens to blind Michael Carrick's side to the same trap. With Aston Villa visiting this weekend, Carrick must heed Scholes' lesson that chaotic comebacks are unsustainable against quality opposition.
