Why Unai Emery is right to stay at Aston Villa – and reject Man United

Emery is on the verge of signing a new contract with Aston Villa beyond 2029, signalling he will reject Manchester United's interest.

Unai Emery is close to agreeing a new contract extension with Aston Villa that will keep him at the club beyond 2029, a move that appears designed to send a clear message ahead of Sunday's match at Manchester United.

The 55-year-old manager has been the subject of speculation linking him to Old Trafford, but the article argues that staying at Villa is the right decision. Emery has built an almost ideal position at Villa, where everything is constructed around him and he has near-complete control — a level of authority rarely seen at elite clubs outside of Mikel Arteta's situation at Arsenal.

While Manchester United remains one of football's most storied institutions with significant historical prestige, the analysis suggests the club does not suit Emery's needs or management style. His record above Europa League level has raised questions about whether he would thrive at a club of United's scale, with previous employers Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain questioning whether his outlook fitted their requirements. At Villa, Emery's work is amplified by the club's structure, allowing them to consistently over-perform despite recent summer departures.
